Home: A Marriage of Hope and Compromise – John & JoJo Judy

John and I did our first collaborative paintings in 2020 shortly after my first miscarriage. Creating together was healing, and these pieces will remain in our collection for life. One of these two pieces heavily explored both John’s abstract expressionism with a color family invoking the “spark” of youth, as well as JoJo’s subjective style and use of patterns depicting one thousand paper cranes. According to Japanese tradition, folding one thousand paper cranes is said to make one very special wish come true. “Home: A Marriage of Hope and Compromise” comes as a sequel to this piece, after John and JoJo’s very special wish of creating a family and building a life together has come true. The dual paintings, one on canvas, the other on wood represent the necessary compromises in our relationship and family. The Metallic detailing represents the treasures we have found in each other, building a family, and a home together. The colors of the background, paper cranes and more carry thematic threads through our collaborative work.
